This is my idea of an absolutely perfect musical composition. I cannot imagine a single note being altered in its pitch, registral placement, duration, metrical implication, or emotional trajectory, or meaningful inhabiting of the entirely usual ternary ABA form. AND it superbly inhabits the world of the instrument for which it was created. And it is instantly identifiable as the voice of the person who made it: Brahms.... at once rational, and deeply felt. How I pray to make even one work that rises to this level of impeccable expression and craftsmanship. And while I love Lupus reading, there are many other entirely credible ways to read these relationships. True profundity in the most modest and concise means.
