This is my speech on 5th September_the first day of the new school year. I am looking forward to receiving feedback from you all. An Inspirational Speech ____5th September, 2013____ Ladies and gentlemen! Good morning, everybody! How are you today? Louder, please! Thank you! I am fine, too! Welcome to the first day of the school year! All of you look very excited. Are you ready for your schooling? READY? Oh, yes! Very good! Before getting the ball rolling, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude toward our principal, Mr. Nguyen Quang who gave me an honor to be here to discuss the significance of speaking English well. “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for coming along here today. I hope my speech isn’t going to take too long and that you will find it interesting. The purpose of today’s speech is to discuss how we can improve our English. Now let me begin by my self- introduction. I am Huong. I am a teacher of English. I have been a teacher for 8 years! I have been back from a master course of TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages). I was under the sponsorship of the Australian government. I got Ausaid scholarship and studied at a very wonderful La Trobe University, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia for two years. I have gained different scholarships (A scholarship awarded by European Commission, a scholarship awarded by Singapore, a scholarship awarded by the Australian Government). I am going to apply for Gates Cambridge Scholarship which is under the sponsorship of Mr. Bill Gates and Mrs. Merinda gates or some other world class scholarships for my doctorate degree in the field of educational leadership and management in few more years. I am interested in building engaging professional learning communities for Vietnamese teachers of English. Secondly, I want to emphasize the importance of English. Why do you learn English? Number 1: it is a compulsory subject at school. Number 2: It is a compulsory subject at your graduation examination. Number 3: It is a passport for some students to enter universities. Now let’s think out of the box! We just think about these above things when you learn English, learning grammar, vocabulary, doing reading exercises and exercising your writing practice are enough. I think when our government introduced this language into schools; our authorities have higher expectations on you, young Vietnamese in general, gifted students at Chu Van An School in particular. My interpretations of our Vietnamese government’s goals as follows: Number 1: you study English to pass exams with flying colors. Number 2: Learning English well helps you become more productive contributors of Vietnam who are going to be diplomats, politicians, successful businessmen, negotiators, lawyers who can communicate well in English in order to attract foreign investment, to participate in worldwide debate, to do business with counterparts in the world and so on. Number 3: When you can communicate well in English, of course, many doors are open for you. -(Education) Winning scholarships and studying abroad -(Career)Getting a well paid job, joining international workplace… - Travelling around the world, making friends worldwide, understanding people, cultures from other parts of the world - Reading useful materials in English (about science, medicine, literature and so on) Thirdly, I would like to give you some advice on how to speak English well Number 1: be active and responsible students to participate in classroom activities. When you change your attitude toward this language, you view learning English as fun games. You come to class with energy, enthusiasm, determination to learn well. In the class, you are eager to speak, to discuss, to share with your partners in English. Do not be afraid of making mistakes in the English class. I make mistakes when I speak English. We are not perfect. Do not tease your friends when they make mistakes. Give them feedback. For example, when your friend makes a mistake of the tense. You can say I think we should say I went to school yesterday instead of I goed to school yesterday. Something like that. Number 2: Have a very clear vision about why you learn English. You learn English to become a diplomat, a world class businessmen/women, blah, blah…. Number 3: Set your goals to learn English to get there (get there means to pass your exams, to get scholarships, to become a famous politician…..). For example, today I will not go to Facebook to complain about my life, about the teachers….Instead, I will spend one hour listening and repeating, thirty minutes learning grammar. Just need to do some little things like that. Who knows, you will realize your dreams based your day in, day out efforts. Do not waste your time! Number 4: Asking for help. You can ask your friends, teachers for advice on how to speak English well. Number 5: Joining extra activities such as the English speaking club. Now say I if you want to speak English well. Louder, please. Thank you! Thank you very much!
