This is not a happy story but it is one that must be shared as the death of these two bats could have been prevented. They were victims of a dog attack. The baby came in already dead and mum had to be euthanased due to the severity of her injuries. Mum was separated from her baby during the attack but she was seen crawling over the lawn to find and cradle her baby. Such is the devotion of flying-fox mothers. Thousands of bats are attacked and killed by dogs each year. How can we prevent this? Glad you asked. Keep your dog restrained at night and take it out to toilet on a lead if you have feed trees in your yard. Simple really. Please consider our wildlife if you have domestic pets. The two can co-exist with a bit of forethought.
