This is not a rant but I would like to spread the word. Please especially women, start lifting weights if you are cleared by your doctor. Now my purpose is not to promote buff fit people. The purpose is to prevent so many injuries as we age. Now Im not saying lift like a powerlifter but make sure its challenging. See in society we are told to do as little lifting as possible because its bad for us. But the truth is, lifting heavy after years of not lifting is the problem. People say dont lift with your back but your back has muscles designed for lifting. If you do not learn to properly activate these muscles your back muscles will fail during a lift therefore placing all the strain on your spine. Muscle soreness can be healed with stretching and rest, herniated spines on the other hand cannot. Another big problem comes from aging. Women in particular lose bone density quick. Weight lifting increases bone density therefore helping reduce bone loss. This helps prevent bone fractures during small falls in your later years. Finally as we age we believe that we should slow down. Well slowing down and being less active leads to strength loss which results in less activity. Before you know it youre not choosing to be less active, your body is forcing you to be less active and youre in that position where you become too weak to lift yourself up after a fall. Theres a reason why the elderly in many 3rd world countries are able to move around in their 90s. Its because they are forced to be active all their lives due to poverty. Your body only keeps the strength and muscles it needs. So make sure to keep challenging your body. Now remember I said do this safely. Dont just go hit the gym and start throwing big weights around. Get professional advice. This is meant for healthy individuals who dont suffer from debilitating diseases like arthritis etc.
