This is not going to be a popular statement, but I believe that it is true and that it needs to be said: humans are not special. We are not the only conscious animals, and our lack of understanding of how animals experience the world should not be license to treat them so horribly. We have no natural right to capture, force breed, torture, and kill any other conscious entity, and the idea that we do lies in our Judeo-Christian roots. Reinforcing that tradition is the idea that because we are smarter than other animals, we are somehow above them. I look at it this way: because we are smarter, we have a special obligation. We are able to look at our actions and assess their consequences. We can see that aspects of our lifestyle are detrimental to ourselves, others, and the planet as a whole, and can then identify different ways of meeting our needs that are less harmful.
