This is not good news, but its the truth and the truth has value - TopicsExpress

This is not good news, but its the truth and the truth has value over stubborn ignorance of the truth. Our country *does* torture. Just like everybody else we condemn for torturing people. We dont seem to do it as much as the most well known practitioners. But we find our excuses and our legal framework to claim that torture isnt torture. I am 5000% against torture. Unless . . . in a pinch . . .well, this is the problem, eh? In a pinch . . .with the fate of many lives hanging in the balance . . .it could be the way to go? Im sure thats how the dynamic rolls forward, and after a while there are more and more circumstances that make torture look like a good choice, even though it represents the extreme opposite of everything I believe in. There are always ways to justify it, if we want, and lots of people to tell us that it is, after all, perfectly reasonable to do it. Or its not that bad. But what good does torture do if its not reeeeeally bad? And we also have all our fave movies and tv shows which provide torture entertainment around the clock. But I prefer that my country not publicly stand up *for* the practice of torture because it has a way of breaking free of all restraint (as though restraint could apply to the intentional practice of torture).
