This is not something that came from my freezer. Yes, it is frozen but it is not food, it is a frog. Dead? you ask.. No! far from it. In a superb and ingenious adaptation, this wood frog has learned to survive the harsh Arctic winter by freezing for 9 months of the year. During this time, its heart stops beating, the water in its body turns to ice and its body temperature is sub zero. At the end of this long hibernation, it will defrost itself, back in to its smart summer self, and go looking for a mate. Well, when you only have 3 months left in a year, you sure need to hurry, dont you? Jokes apart, this frog is of enormous interest in the scientific community. Instead of freezing organs for transplant, scientists in the future may take a clue or two from this frog and freeze entire bodies instead to preserve what is inside...
