This is off subject, but then again not. There is a spectacular book out there. a memoir by an archaeologist..... that I recommend highly, if for no other reason than to build up our archaeologists self esteem:-) The Glen Canyon Country: A Personal Memoir by Don D. Fowler. This book not only contains a reference to a top pack being pulled over on a mules hindquarters during a Powell Expedition (page 64) but he writes about perhaps the only man I have ever met that I truly envied, Dick Sprang. I met this man near Teasdale, Utah, circa 1970. I was asking permission of him, the landowner, to photograph the rock art in Fish Creek Cove and he invited us in. He regaled me with stories of Charles Kelly, Katie Lee, Glen Canyon, Peru and The Outlaw Trail. He had long gray hair, a goatee and was dressed in what appeared to be an authentic Civil War uniform with Cavalry belt buckle... Those of you who know Wayne County will appreciate this story. I am listening to him while looking at the jaw dropping beauty of Fish Creek Cove (which he owned with a huge home and even more breathtaking 2nd home containing i.e.an authentic bar from Deadwood, Montana and a 16th century leather chest from Peru. I am astounded that there is a for sale sign on the property and cannot help but ask Why on Gods earth would you leave this place and he told me The potato farmers are getting too close. This was before Wayne County was discovered but he could see it coming I guess. Great book with unfortunately a breathtaking price.
