This is one of the fallacies that we in the neurodiversity crowd - TopicsExpress

This is one of the fallacies that we in the neurodiversity crowd get very frustrated about. There is a huge misunderstanding about autism prevailing in the world that autism IS its symptoms and that when the symptoms disappear, the autism is gone. But, just like a cold, getting rid of the symptoms doesnt actually change the underlying condition. Autism is not a set of behaviors. Autism is a genetic and brain structure difference. Those differences affect behavior and psychology. We are intelligent people and can be trained, not unlike a dog, to betray our nature and fake acting like non autistics and learn to function in society. Some autistics feel doing this is morally wrong, similar to the way gay advocates say forcing gays to act straight is wrong. I believe thats a point to be made but I prefer to participate in society and benefit from that participation. I hope the day comes, however, when we are able to flap and be as weird as we naturally are without being rejected and judged. So no, autism cannot be cured. But yes the symptoms are usually worked around, especially if caught early.
