This is our owl box story of the year: on the 22/10/2014 we were ringing two Spotted Eagle owlets (Bubo africanus) in an EcoSolutions owl box at Dainfern. While we were removing the owlets for ringing, the female remained unperturbed and allowed us to remove the youngsters from beneath her. This odd behaviour revealed a ring on the broody female. We checked her ring number with Craig Nattrass, a ringer who takes time out of his busy day to ring owls for EcoSolutions. The SAFRING database established that she was an owl who had been released in 2006 from the Fourways Gardens Estate through the EcoSolutions/FreeMe Owl Release Programme. Amazing! Here is an owl, released by EcoSolutions 8 years ago, happily sitting on 2 fluffy owlets in an Ecosolutions Owl box. If she hadnt been ringed we would never have known who she was. How wonderful it all is.
