This is pretty awesome. Something that Im really fortunate to be experiencing is the opportunity to observe the differences in academic testing.. and how it affects mental stability. Some of my classes are brilliantly organized and are putting the resources that weve evolved to co-exist with to incredible use (Ex. online labs, testing, social labs where participation isnt feared). And those are the classes where professors typically encourage a comprehension and understanding of material and where critical thinking is a focus. It becomes an issue when we are asked to memorize facts or numbers that are abstract to the understanding of any concepts. One of the biggest issues that I have with academic testing is the insistence that we be INDIVIDUALLY tested on memory all the time, counting for over 50% of our grades. This makes very little sense for people growing up in a society where we are never alone and always have access to an external knowledge device (computer, smart phone, etc). We walk around with a computer in our pocket. With the introduction of the internet, a MASSIVE shared knowledge base, our memory centres arent nearly as stimulated as they used to be. We dont need to memorize anything any more. No phone numbers, no ones birthday, no recipes, directions, etc. Because smart phones and internet can do all of that for us. When asked to regurgitate, students can sometimes initiate a fight or flight response, because that area of the brain is so out of practise. We work best sharing knowledge and working together with the human and internet resources available to us. I think the memorizing method of testing is outdated and useless. With access to the internet and books, we have become significantly more intelligent. I think itd be cool if we focused less on the memory aspect of learning and channelled more energy into combining all of the brilliant knowledge weve acquires and put more focus into thinking critically and problem solving. I believe that education is, and needs to continue to evolve with the resources available to its students! Because learning is damn fun. https://youtube/watch?v=D-eVF_G_p-Y
