This is really fascinating. Every April 1st I notice people reposting April Fools Day satires without indications that they are jokes and I see some people taking them seriously. I see it more commonly with other content from The Onion and other satires. Its interesting to see that some people are studying the impact of these on peoples psyches. Especially those prone to believing in conspiracy theories. This suggests an interesting mechanism for the emergence of conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories seem to come about by a process in which ordinary satirical commentary or obviously false content somehow jumps the credulity barrier.
