This is really thought provoking: From the author of The Disobedience of the Daughter of the Sun. I learned to speak to the world and about the world in a sophisticated ancient language that did not contain the verb to be. He is saying that a language that functions without a verb like is, was, has been, zooms even past all encompassing and ringing metaphors into a realm of what is eternal, about soul. Its hard to even articulate what the author is saying, but I get a sense of this. What I am learning from this book, is that the Mayan culture contains a layered understanding of its creation stories connecting to everything. A symphony. Heres a sample: The Moon is the rhythmic, ancestral heart against whose complex and insistent cadence the Myriad Things of the world do moan, move and dance. She is the djembe, the tympani, the tabla, the creaking of crickets, the evenly spaced feathers on a birds wing, the drumming of a rabbits hind leg, the rings of a wild goats horn, the crisscross ripples in a stream. He is not saying the Moon is like this as in a simile or metaphor, but rather the Moon IS this. That is a total perception of Union, of ONE. Perhaps this is one up from metaphor as even more a totality.
