This is remarkable. A math professor at Duke just ran an experiment in which he used the basic principles of political redistricting - equal population and general compactness - to let a computer draw 100 maps. Then he re-ran the 2012 NC congressional election for each of these new maps. 95 out of 100 times, the electoral result was significantly better for the minority party (likely because more people actually voted for the minority party). Translation: The districts were drawn to *overwhelmingly* favor one party over the other. Solution: We have to stop letting politicians draw our political districts.
