Women, men, children all marching for climate action. This was the scene just hours ago as thousands of people took to the streets in Lima, Peru in South America’s biggest climate rally ever. In contrast, negotiators and leaders from rich countries like Australia continue to drag their heels inside the halls of the UN climate talks. Email Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop now to join hundreds of thousands of people demanding rich countries like Australia do their fair share at the UN climate talks in Peru. Australia did commit $200 million over four years for the Green Climate Fund to help poor countries deal with climate change. Sadly, it’s well short of our fair contribution. What’s more, this money will be taken from an already diminished aid budget. In the wake of recent extreme weather events such as typhoon Hagupit, the need to slash emissions and support vulnerable communities with managing climate risks is clearer and more urgent than ever.
