Its a form of obstetric violence perpetuated by an entire society, most of all by folks who continue to wonder why women of color keep wanting to talk about race in conversations about birth. This, here, is why. Americas crises of maternal and infant mortality are really Black Americas crises - though its up to all of us to solve them. We can trace violence and dysfunction back to birth, as Michel Odent does, but a respectful experience of pregnancy and birthing isnt going significantly change the world into which black women are birthing their babies.
