This is so, so on point. And Im posting this as a huge GoT (I just finished book 3 this morning) and Star Trek fan. I especially appreciate the authors response to people who would claim hes overreacting and just looking for things that can be interpreted as racist: I have never gone looking for racism, racism finds me and slaps me in the face. HOW DOES IT ALWAYS KNOW WHERE TO FIND ME? I feel the same exact way. Ive come to expect certain people telling me in frustration that its just a movie/TV show, etc. But it doesnt feel good at all when friends, especially other people of color, are dismissive of these critiques. Not to mention the disappointment I and so many others feel when we see, read, and experience these and other insidious racist elements in sci-fi and fantasy that we otherwise genuinely love…and by the suffocating feeling that we cant escape this shit anywhere; that even in so many of the made-up worlds of fiction we have to mentally and emotionally battle white supremacy.
