This is so wrong. All of it. I dont know whether Im more furious with Disney for insisting on these changes, which will GUT Into the Woods, or with Sondheim for a) not pushing harder for including Any Moment, and sticking to the original plotline; and b) letting Disney near this show in the first place. I like Disney, though I dont like how they treat their teenybopper girl icons, but Into the Woods is not a Disney show. Into the Woods does not sugar coat the issues it presents. Thats part of the point of this musical. Disney sugarcoats many issues, and this doesnt work with Sondheim, especially Into the Woods. Why even do it at all? And you know what gets me? Disney wont let Rapunzel die or Cinderellas Prince have an affair with the Bakers Wife, but there is no mention of them objecting to Lucinda and Florinda getting parts of their feet chopped off and their eyes pecked out. Also, its missIng the point and messing up the musical even more to have separate actors playing the Wolf and Cinderellas Prince. And just in case its not clear how I feel about this gutting of my favorite musical of all time: I. Am. Livid. I would watch the Rozema Mansfield Park, the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, read Moby Dick and the entire works of Ernest Hemingway to prevent this travesty of a film being released.
