This is something I posted in response to one of my FB friends string. It was just reposed to after over a year and a half ago. Both friends are German, and Im so happy to be able to call them friends. I have a heart warming story about a young German soldier who was tired and hungry and cold, fighting on the Russian Front, when he came upon an equally tired, hungry and cold young Russian soldier, all alone and wounded. The young German soldier related this story to me years later in Taiwan. Telling me how the young German was surprised at seeing the Russian, but quickly realized he was not a threat, was hurt and vulnerable. Instead of killing him, he went and sat next to him, took out some old newspaper and rolled a cigarette in a piece of that paper, lit it and offered the Russian a cigarette. There was a bit more to the story, but the gist was, when alone, cold, tired and wet; away from the rigors of war, there was no hate, only a sense of human empathy and compassion for another human being, somewhere, where they would rather not be.
