This is something which is pretty big in string theory circles, and which proves just how much these people have given up on any pretense of science: The strong anthropic principle (SAP) as explained by John D. Barrow and Frank Tipler (see variants) states that this is all the case because the Universe is compelled, in some sense, to eventually have conscious and sapient life emerge within it. So, the universe is the way it is because, consciousness, shut up! What else do I need to do to justify my ideas? Nothing, just make an appeal to the existence of consciousness. The universe works this way, because if it didnt, no conscious being would exist to say that is why it exists.
