This is somewhat related to the post on my personal page. As writers, we must entertain by creating drama and narrative, but we should also appreciate and help the readers appreciate nuances and ambiguities. All too often, good and evil are turned into absolutes and hauled down to the level of a Sunday School class for children. To me, this is an emotional reach-around. Too often, drama is created by having someone stand fast for their convictions against overwhelming opposition (or, sometimes, straw men.) This tend to follow the pure good versus pure evil schtick. If we actually believe this, it suggests were too naïve to be good writers. Anyone whos been around the block knows that, yes, there is almost pure evil in some quarters, but the opposition are not plaster saints, because theyre the easiest things broken.
