This is the Fri, Jan 2 edition of My Music Video of the Day. Todays music video is Inside Out by the Austin, Texas-based band, Spoon. This band is still going, quite strongly, I might add since their beginnings in the 90s. There are times when the visuals of a music video sync quite well with other aspects of that music video. This is one of those music videos. It shows a gentle morphing from one visual to another at a pace that adds to the dreamlike sounds that are produced musically. And speaking of musically, what a mood it creates. I think that the synthetic beats, the harp-like sounds along with sounds of the wind add to this kind of ethereal, lazy, dream-like atmosphere that is haunting yet soothing. The combination of that musical atmosphere with the slowly changing images of the video are the strongest aspects of this music video as far as my eyes and ears are concerned. Listening to the lyrics reveals what appears to be a lovers explanation of the effect that he/she has on him. It begins with a declaration that times gone inside out, time gets distorted with, theres intense gravity This sentiment seems to be revealing his perception of how he feels. However, the song takes an unexpected turn when he seems to express how he feels about religious fanatics when he says... I dont got time for holy rollers, but then they wash my feet, and I wont be their soldier. He goes on to repeat the line about intense gravity but adds Im just your satellite. It gives us the image of the power of his lover to influence him to be held sway by that power. He again makes reference to the holy rollers but adds that they do not make him complete. The unspoken part is that he/she does make him complete. In the final words of the song, he says, Mmmm, theres only you I need, they do not make me complete. I am also providing the following links via separate posts: a link to the Wikipedia entry for the band, Spoon, a link to the Wikipedia entry for their latest album which contains todays song and their previous hit, Do You and a link to the YouTube music video for that song. Enjoy! Give it a listen and tell me what you think.
