This is the Mon, Dec 29 edition of My Music Videos of the Year. Todays song is Rude by Magic, a Canadian reggae-fusion band. This music video has had over 316 million views on You Tube, almost like being viewed by every man, woman and child in the US at least once. This very popular music video is an exercise in simplicity and maybe a lesson that other music video productions can benefit from. What I mean is this a straightforward music video with a simple reggae-sounding song and easy-to-understand lyrics. It doesnt have a complex visual, lyrical or musical structure. It is kind of a what-you-see-is-what you-get type of production. What you see is our lead singer, while dropping off his girlfriend at her parents, eventually asks her father for permission to marry. He tries pleading with him several times and each time he is rebuffed by him. Each time, he asks the father, Why do have to be so rude? He then tells the father that despite the fathers refusal to bless the proposed wedding, he is going to marry her anyway. For the literal-minded, one could argue that there is a racial component to the song. The singer is of Arabian-Palestinian descent while the girl is AngloSaxon or Teutonic. It could be argued that the deeper issue here is a marriage of disparate races. I did not take it that way and I find no eveidence that indicates that the singer/co-writer had that in mind when he wrote the song. As to the music, it is a simple reggae-fusionl ditty. Reggae-fusion means a combination of reggae with pop or rock. I think it is mostly a reggae-pop song. If you heard anything by Bob Marley, you will immediately recognize the rhythm in this tune. Lyrically, again it is very straightforward. Man gets out of bed, drives to his girlfriends parents house, asks for her fathers approval to marry his daughter, gets rejected, questions the father about his rudeness, tells him he is going to marry her anyway, says he hates to do this, that he cant live without her, maybe they will run away, etc.,etc. A timeless scenario played out in real society daily. Must of happened enough times to have, figuratively, the equivalent of the population of the US watch this music video. In separate posts, I am including the following: a link to the You Tube lyric video for this song, a link to the Wikipedia entry for the band, Magic and a link to the songfacts Web site for the song, Rude. Enjoy! Give it a listen and tell me what you think.
