This is the Monday report from Mayberry by the Sea....the northeast wind is blowing cool air over the island today rescuing us from the eternal heat from the depths of hell that have enveloped us lately...I awoke after a long night in the studio and thought I had died and gone to Heaven......I looked out of the transom window as i lay on the futon trying to wake up and looked at the trees outside and realized the wind was from the northeast and that means three things....1......Bunkys screen door is slamming open and shut in its frame.....2.........the surf may rising......and 3....its going to be a cool and I can paint with my doors open this morning........but first I needed some creamer for my coffee and brings me to another........Incident at Publix......as I drove across the long marsh road I couldnt help but think of how much things have changed and how much they have stayed the same......I have driven over this road for over 40 years and have seen a lot of things on this road....the bridge was closed and I stopped and waited for it to open when the sailboat passed under it.......I looked over the body of water to the left and remembered when a man showed up one day with a rag tag fleet of boats and declared the island on the other side was his to live on and squatted for about two years until one by one the boats anchored just broke up and sank....we were a bunch of smartass kids that leaned out of the window of the school bus and cussed at him flipping him the bird every time we drove by...the thought made my chuckle...the vision of him flipping the bird back at us............but today it was the scene that I see often........an osprey is hovering over the water looking intently under its surface for fish...........a pelican is circling as well and takes the plunge into the water and comes up empty and flies away hungry.........the osprey tries over and over and on the fourth try he succeeds and catches a fish and flies away.....persistence is the key to success I thought.......if you have the talent.........persistence will get you to where you want to go...................the bridge opens up and I look over to Gold Bug Island.....a party island that Edgar Allen Poe wrote about......I remembered the night when I was in college and left a party and washell bent on getting out of there ....I didnt plan my path of departure very well and ended up in the marsh and had to be pulled out of the mud by a jeep with a wench on the front bumper....so that was the second lesson I learned while travelling the long marsh road......1.....persistence will get up to where you want to go...and....2.....a haste and impatience can lead to bad decisions.....but a well thought out plan is necessary for forward mobility..........then I drove over the bridge to the spot where a tire once came hurling down the bridge bouncing and rolling down the road at a high speed toward me almost crashing through my window.....giving me the third lesson......3.....there are dangers and pitfalls ahead but a cool head will navigate you through them if you have the persistence to stay with the plan...........I looked to the left t the luxury homes and condos at the marina in Tolers Cove and remembered when they used to make shrimp boats here.....I miss the seeing the old buildings and the shrimp boats but as they say...change is the most constant thing in life.......lesson 4......change is something we have to adapt to and sometimes presents opportunities......those luxury condos and homes need a Mickey Williams painting capturing the best sunsets around...make a note...........I drove a little farther and remembered the ski ramp that use to be in the body of water to the left before the road meets the mainland....I remembered people hitting the ramp and flying forever before connecting to the water with their skis......that gave me lesson ...5....be prepared to take risks.........persistence and a well thought out plan are necessary to get you through the dangers and pitfalls that lie ahead....but be prepared to adapt to changes and see the opportunity in them.........and driving back to the studio I realized the most important lesson....6.....faith in what you are doing..........you have to believe in yourself and what you are doing and to do that it is necessary to drown out the negative forces that will try to deter you..........so I walk into the studio......persistent to carry out my well thought out plan......ready for the dangers and pitfalls....aware of the changes around me and ready to take advantage of the opportunities they present......not afraid to take risks.... because I have the faith .....that today..... I will paint a masterpiece.....in Mayberry by the sea....not just a zip code but a state of mind......
