This is the Sat, Jan 3 edition of My Music Video of the Day. Todays music video is The Singer by Ty Segall. I first heard this 27-year old guitarist, drummer, vocalist and songwriter when he was promoting his newest album, The Manipulator earlier in late summer of 2014. It was actually another song called Feel that turned me on to this artist. In the last seven years, he has produced eight albums and has been associated with seven different bands including his own touring band that bears his name. As to the music video, it opens with Ty playing the opening notes of the song while fiddling around with the camera shooting this video. He then backs up and we see that he is in a brick walked room. In the meantime, the first verse of the song is sung and, like phantoms, his band mates appear. Gives it kind of a spooky feel to it. They continue until they reach the guitar solo which is at the end of the song. Then, he rises rather clumsily in the air with his inability to know what to do with his dangling legs. Then at the end of the song, he is unceremoniously dropped on the floor. Perhaps, it was for comic effect. Musically, throughout all of this, he sings in a rather high-pitched register. There are times when I am reminded of Marc Bolan of T-Rex fame. He has that sound and inflection that Marc had. The music here is very simplistic from the opening notes to the raw strum of the guitar. Perhaps the only thing that has any feel of complexity is the ending guitar solo. But this is as it should be, since its the climax of the song, after all. Lyrically, he seems to be expressing his feelings for his love. This is a theme that I hear over and over in the music that I have researched for past music videos. He sings, I can hear the sound, when my loves around, whistle in the trees, it sits inside the bees, when my loves around. As love will do, it plays with our minds and his love-struck mind equates love with a sound. In the chorus, he encourages us to sing... sing, louder... louder. He continues in the second verse, now I feel so down, shuffling on the ground, some come hold me, we wont be found, when my loves around. Then, its on to a repeat of the chorus until the song reaches the end. I have included the following information via links, each in a separate post: a link to the Wikipedia entry for Ty Segall, a link to the Wikipedia entry for his latest album and a link to the You Tube music video for the song, Feel which is where I learned of his mastery of the guitar. Enjoy! Give it a listen and tell me what you think.
