This is the Sweetgrass basket that I commissioned from Mary - TopicsExpress

This is the Sweetgrass basket that I commissioned from Mary Jefferson. It is our gift from South Carolina to Germany and will belong to Elder Becks Mission President! We designed it together and she created it. I named it Fishers of Men. The basket is very unique. It can be hung for decoration or the inserts can be removed and it can be used to hold bread or rolls at a meal. The close up shows three symbol charms woven together. A Liahona compass, gold scriptures and a Star of David. They symbolize President Kosaks demonstrations of faith, knowledge (CES Director in Russia for 7 years), and covenant (he loves Jewish studies.) The larger fish is the mission president. The smaller ones are missionaries. The circles are West African Andrinki and symbolize greatness, charisma and leadership. One represents the President, the other his wife. The circles in the handles represent Eternity, the three knots on the rim are inginuity, intelligence and patience (Andrinki wisdom knot) The art of Sweetgrass basket making was passed down to Mary from ancestors who brought the tradition from Africa to the local rice plantations 300 years ago. She learned how to make them from her grandmother and great-grandmother and began selling them in the Charleston downtown Market but now designs by personalized individual order. This is Mary and I at her baptism seven weeks ago. Today at Wilhelminas baptism Mary gave the most beautiful baptism talk I have ever heard.
