This is the best I could do trying to read the recipes on the old photo posted today. Many times when I jot off a recipe I will add the line: mix as for any cake. These recipes do not go even that far, so I will say from my experience: Mix as for any cake. LOL! This means cream (fat) with sugar; add eggs one at a time; sift dry ingredients together; mix alternating dry ingredients with wet ingredients; ending with wet; beat until fluffy. Most layer cakes call for 350F degrees for 25 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the pans used. The first 2 appear to need 2-9” pans. The War Cake appears to imply a bundt pan or tube pan. One hour would be way too long for layers or a 9 X 13”. If you decide to try these, good luck and let us know how they turn out. The hushpuppies are dead on correct without any added "heat" that the deep south sometimes adds like cayenne pepper. I do add 1 tbs. vegetable oil to mine so they are a bit lighter textured. MAYONNAISE CAKE 1 cup mayonnaise 2 cups flour 1 cup warm water 1 cup sugar 2 tsp. soda 4 tbs. cocoa 1 tsp. vanilla Bake 30 minutes SPICE CAKE 1 1/3 cups fat 1 cup dark brown sugar 2 tbs. granulated sugar (unsure of the measurement) 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. nutmeg 1/8th tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 1 egg 1 cup sour milk 2 cups flour 2 tsp. soda Cream fat and sugar and beat 2 minutes. Bake 30 minutes in a moderately slow oven. WAR CAKE 2 cups sugar 4 tbs. shortening 2 cups raisins 2 tea baking powder 2 ½ cups flour ¾ tab. pumpkin pie spice 2 tea. Soda Enough juice off raisins to make 2 cups Cook raisins in 3 cups water. Coat raisins in 2 tablespoons flour Bake in oven at 350 F. for one hour. HUSH PUPPIES 1 cup corn meal ½ cup flour (educated guess) 2 tea. Baking powder ½ tea. Salt 1 egg 1 cup milk or water 1 large chopped onion Drop mixture from spoon in hot shortening. Fry 4-5 minutes. ~
