This is the cover photo for the Cedar Rapids 50s & 60s page. This is nearly the same angle and view (though not a high up) as you get from atop Mt. Trashmore. I wish it were panoramic however because it would easily illustrate how ill conceived the notion was/is of putting some sort of park or recreational area/tourist attraction up there. As one pans to the right from this pleasant view you get a nice view of Mercy Hospital then you get to see the barren flats of the old Wilsons/Farmstead site. Not as ugly as before the flood, but still a fairly bleak visage. Continuing to your right you would then see the (and possibly smell) the eyeball wrenching Cargill plant with its twenty+ smokestacks and steam vents. Then youd see a pleasant but smallish view of the river as it turns sharply East and out of view. Then you would see the old, filthy and rusty, coal fired Alliant Energy electrical generation station. Then youd get to see a pleasant view of South Cedar Rapids. Then youd see the lovely (and stinky) Penford plant in all its glory, then back around to an updated version of the view depicted below, which, incidentally, conveniently excludes all those other lovely landmarks Ive just mentioned. Theres a lot of ugly to see up there. Also, youd have in mind that you are standing upon millions of tons of rotting garbage and flood debris. Gee, lets have a picnic kids! .... ;)
