This is the day of our family Thanksgiving celebration. My child still sleeps. My husband is not yet in from Nashville, nor is my brother and his family in from Asheville. My sister and her family are just a few miles away in their own home, and Papa is making the rounds here at the house, opening drapes and turning on heaters. I have ham and dressing to put in the oven, cream to whip, dishes to put out... but I savor these last quiet moments with my thoughts of Mother, a prayer, a conversation, an ask for her to guide me today, to give me strength in her absence, in the missing that gapes like a lost tooth in a smile....
