This is the first book in a planned trilogy because while the second book Conspirita came out we are still waiting for the third and final book. This is a historical fiction work that I quite like about one of Romes greatest statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero and walks through his political life. There are generally two views on Marcus Tullius Cicero and one being that he was Republican Romes greatest statesman or that politically he was an epic failure. While I do not take the super heroic status that the author Robert Harris takes and Cicero certainly was not an epic failure though he and all of the other Republicans were thoroughly outwitted by Caius Julius Caesar though Cicero outlived Caesar and refused to work for his dictatorship and he commended the assassins for killing Caesar. Cicero did much to destroy Marcus Antonius reputation at Rome which was easy to do given Mark Anthonys hedonistic, lawless, party boy nature. Cicero however was betrayed by Caius Octavius later the first emperor of Rome named Augustus. Cicero was unfortunately killed but Augustus picked up where Cicero left off in destroying Mark Anthony in Rome and Italy finally defeating Marcus Antonius and driving him to commit suicide with Cleopatra in Egypt which would have had Cicero laughing at Anthony from the grave. The book is excellent for anyone who likes Ancient Rome in general and Marcus Tullius Cicero in particular.
