This is the monument for the 1687 Huguenot Colony that settled in South Africa. The Huguenots left France and settled all over the world in the 1680s after the revocation of the edict of Nantes. They came from the port of Rochelle in France. After the revocation of the edict they were persecuted for their faith and suffered at the hands of the Catholic Church where their only choice was to renounce their faith or be tortured and burned. There was a mass exodus from their Homeland in the 1680s and those exiles for their faith founded the town of Oxford where a monument also marks that colony.
