This is the most unique and historic image of the Immaculate Heart of Mother Mary in the world who wept tears on 29 August 1953, which lasted until September 1. The sacred image was gifted to Angelo Giannuso & Antonina Lucia Giusto, a very poor couple, on their wedding on 21 March 1953. Even if they were considered communists, they were also Catholics in some sense. They hung this sacred image on the wall behind their bed. Antonina soon began to experience great pains due to her pregnancy. She got blind from 3.30 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. on 29 August 1953. When she felt she has recovered her eye-sight back after 8.30 a.m. she turned back to thank Mother Mary only to see that MOTHER MARY WAS SHEDDING TEARS. She kept weeping until September 1. The Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Tears by Saint Pope John Paul II on 6 November 1994! The cotton soaked in the TEARS shed by Mother Mary is reverently placed in the Crypt for prayerful visit and veneration.
