This is the news that started my day: Yesterday, in the Georgia House of Representatives passed a Resolution, HR 1787 recognizing the Atlanta Gay Mens Chorus for its history and work. Rep, Karla Drenner championed the Resolution through the House. The Resolution passed on the same day that AGMC sang in the Georgia Capitol. This is kind of a big deal! Here is the full language: 14 LC 103 0709 H. R. 1787 - 1 - House Resolution 1787 By: Representatives Drenner of the 85th, Bell of the 58th, Waites of the 60th, Fullerton of the 153rd, Abrams of the 89th, and others A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing and commending the AGMC; and for other purposes. 2 WHEREAS, the AGMC was founded in 1981 by artistic director Jeffrey McIntyre with 45 3 talented singers and in this year celebrates its 33rd season; and 4 WHEREAS, through the years, the AGMCs volunteer members have been privileged to 5 share the stage with such notables as Leslie Jordan, former poet laureate Maya Angelou, the 6 Atlanta Opera, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Ballet, Turtle Creek Chorale, 7 and many more; and 8 WHEREAS, the AGMC and its select ensemble, Panache, have been proud to perform at 9 benefits for victims of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, for charitable organizations, such as the 10 Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Food Bank, and AIDS 11 Athens, and for community service events, such as First Night Atlanta, AIDS Walk Atlanta, 12 the Human Rights Campaign Annual Dinner, Toys for Tots, and the Toy Party; and 13 WHEREAS, the chorus has frequently appeared at premier performing arts venues, such as 14 the Fabulous Fox Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Hall, the Cathedral of St. Philip, the Robert 15 Ferst Center for the Performing Arts, the Atlanta Civic Center, Emory University, and Agnes 16 Scott College; as part of the chorus 2007-2008 season, the group performed at the Alliance 17 Theatre of the Woodruff Arts Center and at the world-class Cobb Energy Performing Arts 18 Centre during its inaugural year; and 19 WHEREAS, one of the worlds longest-running choruses of its kind, the AGMC has a 20 well-earned reputation for musical leadership and excellence; and 21 WHEREAS, the group is a member of Chorus America, an organization dedicated to the 22 expansion of the choral movement in North America; and 14 LC 103 0709 H. R. 1787 - 2 - 23 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this 24 remarkable group of distinguished Georgians be appropriately recognized. 25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that 26 the members of this body recognize and commend the incredible talent and dedication of the 27 AGMC and express to them their most sincere best wishes for continued success. 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized 29 and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the AGMC.
