This is the official trailer for the movie Cake. Im going to be honest, Im seriously torn about this. Im glad that the subject of chronic pain is being shown realistically, at least that is what Im hearing, not to mention that it is even being TALKED about. I mean most people treat chronic pain as either all in someones head or that its a dirty little secret they dont want to talk about. Heres my concern, they couldnt do the movie without adding addiction and substance abuse as part of the story line. Why is it necessary? I havent seen the movie so I dont know how prevalent of a story line it is, but you cant even read the what it is rated without being told one of the reasons it is rated R is because of substance abuse. All reviews and synopses also usually cant use the phrase chronic pain and addiction in the same sentences. Ive struggled with chronic illness and pain for over a decade. Ask me if Im concerned about becoming an addict and the answer is a resounding no. Not only is it statistically a very low occurrence, but has never occurred to me as a concern. Dependency on medication to have a quality of life is not addiction. No one tells a diabetic they are addicted to insulin, they are dependent on it to live and not die. Guess what? People with severe chronic pain die too and I guess this is actually addressed in the movie when someone in her support group commits suicide. We die not from addiction, but from no help. From a world that labels, ignorance that stigmatizes us and laws that cause more harm than help. I want to like this as it appears that Jennifer Anniston gives an amazing performance and yes I get that this is just a movie. However, lets be honest their will be PLENTY of people who will walk aware feeling like they learned something and my concern is that what they walk away with will not be helpful. I also promise you that the first person who comes up to me and says they are concerned about me becoming addicted will most likely get slapped. Also the first teenage girl who tweets and romanticizes relationship between her and Sam Worthington and says something stupid like they wished they had chronic pain and want to walk with canes in hopes of finding a dishy guy like that? I will hunt them down and slap their parents.....
