This is the opinion of a certain Mika Nishiyama regarding this - TopicsExpress

This is the opinion of a certain Mika Nishiyama regarding this article, I quote and repost: It should be ok if the non-natives have the teaching skills and speak fluent English with NO ACCENT. Those who speak with foreign accents, please dont consider teaching in Japan! Japanese people already have enough accent problems as we all know, and they shouldnt get more confused because their English teacher is a non-native! Let me ask you this. Would you want your Japanese teacher to be a Korean? Koreans are known to speak fluent Japanese, more so probably than any other people in the world, but most of them are NOT able to pronounce certain sounds right, and talk with a slight accent. Would that not matter to you?..... This is my opinion... I think youre stereotyping some race Mika Nishiyama. In the first place, what is your definition of a native speaker? A person born in the US? You have no idea that even English as English have different accents as well. Someone who has been born in an English environment , been educated in English, and reads and writes and converses in English and most of all, a university graduate, certified to teach definitely has the right to teach English. There are other countries in Southeast Asia like Singapore or the Philippines that have the facility of the English language, totally no twang whatsoever and with an academic degree. Being an American, Canadian, Australian and other English- only speaking native does not necessarily mean that he is capable to teach English theory and English conversation at the same time. Please, stop this disgusting stereotyping of very good English speakers who happen to be not Caucasians. Plus, if a Japanese would really want to be fluent in English, that would all depend on him. A teacher can only teach much and as the saying goes. 1% Inspiration by the teacher and 99% perspiration by the student. In my experience, Japanese are the hardest students to teach English to. Theyre so in a hurry to learn and speak fluently thus resorting to paying a fortune to a native non-certified English teacher and learning a certain kind of vocabulary or phrases which are sometimes unacceptable to the common world. Do some readings and to Japan today, dont you this that this is a racist question to even post publicly on Facebook??
