This is the other young man that arrived tonight. Unfortunately for this guy he has been fed a very improper diet to this point. He is a sulcata tortoise (sometimes known as an African Spur Thigh). We have Hubert who we have had for a couple of years now and this poor fellows shell looks nothing like Huberts. When fed a diet too high in protein the shell on these tortoises will pyramid and sometimes completely deform. He has a few deformities starting but the pyramiding is pretty extreme. These animals are supposed to eat mainly grasses and hay with a bit of treats, like romaine lettuce or pumpkin. Those should be limited as well. For now he is inside (as it is too cool tonight for either tortoise to be outside) and we will keep him separated from Hubert, at least for now. He is a fraction of the size of Hubert and we would not want him to hurt the little guy. I sure wish that when people get these exotic pets that they would do the research before so that this kind of problem would not occur. There is no fix to this issue but a better diet will stop it from getting worse.
