This is the piece I was referring to in the Bryant-Bauxite ore thread. From the Saline Economic Dev. site. In 1887, State Geologist, John C. Branner, discovered bauxite near Fourche Creek south of Little Rock. Fairly soon thereafter, bauxite was found near Hurricane Creek northeast of Benton. As bauxite mining got underway, the City of Bryant incorporated in 1892. Initially, the bauxite ore was mined using picks, shovels, wheelbarrows, and axes. After drying, the ore was hauled by wagon to Bryant, loaded onto rail cars, taken to Memphis, placed on barges and shipped up river to Pennsylvania. In 1893, the town of Bauxite was established by the Pittsburg Reduction Company (later known as ALCOA). In 1897, a mill to crush bauxite was built near the town of Bauxite. In 1907, the Bauxite & Northern Railway Company (BXN) built a three mile line serving the bauxite mines and mill.
