This is the saddest thing we have seen all day. Via our friends at protect keppel bay. We lost our snubfin population near cairns years ago to deaths in shark nets among other factors. A timely reminder of the need to protect our precious marine creatures and environment. "Snubfin Dolphin Stranding in Keppel Bay today. Not a pretty sight on the local beach in Yeppoon this morning and I know you may not want to see this as it is a bit confronting - but I was at the site myself and I want to ensure that the correct story gets out as it would appear the story is changing as it is spreading. The dead snubfin dolphin washed up on the shores of Cooee Bay beach in Yeppoon this morning - there was no distinct reason evident for the death and the fresh scratches on the body seem likely to have come form washing over the rocks as it came ashore. We contacted Marine Parks who facilitate the recording of the stranding and removal of the dolphin so that it could be taken to a vet for a necropsy to be conducted. The snubfin dolphin popluation in the area of the of the Fitzroy Delta do extend their range up the coast of Keppel Bay in inshore waters and there is a genetically and geographically isolated population of less than 100 in the area.
