This is the terrible fix we are in. If the universe is not governed by an absolute goodness, then all our efforts are in the long run hopeless. But if it is, then we are making ourselves enemies to that goodness every day, and are not in the least likely to do any better tomorrow, and so our case is hopeless again....God is the only comfort, He is also the supreme terror: the thing we most need and the thing we most want to hide from. Aceasta este dilema teribilă în care ne aflăm. Dacă universul nu este guvernat de o bunătate absolută, atunci toate eforturile noastre sunt zadarnice când le privim în perspectivă. Dar dacă universul este guvernat de o bunătate absolută, atunci noi înşine ne facem în fiecare zi duşmani ai acelei bunătăţi şi nu există nici cea mai mică şansă să fim mai buni mâine, şi de aceea situaţia noastră este tot fără nădejde. Nu ne putem lipsi de ea [de bunătatea absolută] şi nu putem convieţui cu ea. Dumnezeu este singura mângâiere, dar El este şi teroarea supremă: lucrul de care avem cea mai mare nevoie şi lucrul de care vrem cel mai mult să ne ascundem.
