This is the veteran closest to my heart... My Father, William - TopicsExpress

This is the veteran closest to my heart... My Father, William Coulter, who spent 12 years in the Navy, 1943 to 1955. He took part in the island hopping campaigns in the Pacific in WWII. At Okinawa, his ship, the 157 long LCS(L)(3)-24 was hit by a kamikaze as it provided anti aircraft support for a radar picket destroyer. The Kamikaze was bearing down on my dads ship which was laying smoke to screen the destroyer. At the last second, the pilot saw the destroyer and attempted to pull up, striking the main mast of my dads ship and crashing into the water. At Incheon, during the Korean war, his ship, LST-857 (USS King County) was trapped on the beach under communist fire when the tide went out, stranding his task group on the beach for 12 hours. https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=728947403794843&set=a.728947297128187.1073741833.100000387695856&type=3&theater
