This is the write-up on the Codroy Valley Volunteer Fire Department in today’s (January 21, 2014) Gulf News Fire department revival underway The Codroy Valley Volunteer Fire Department is updating and upgrading its equipment and members and are asking the public to keep an eye out for fundraising events that will be taking place throughout the year. “Our first fundraiser is about to get underway - it is a door-to-door campaign,” said volunteer Brian Osmond. “At this time we will also be distributing fridge magnets to the homes in our area.” The fridge magnets contain phone numbers to all the emergency services in the area and were donated to the department by the Codroy Seniors 50 + Club, said Osmond. Members will be going around in the first couple of weeks in February, to every home in each community. The department’s area of responsibility is from North Branch to Red Rocks and everything in between including the McDougall’s area. With such a large area, Osmond said the need to update and replace equipment is crucial. He said they have collected some equipment from other departments on and off the island. “Our breathing apparatus have to be recertified and additional air tanks are required,” said Osmond. “As well, we are trying to purchase new communication equipment.” He said that further fundraising information will be posted on the group’s Facebook page. Before the Jan. 7 regular meeting for the department, they had 18 active members. That number was increased to 23 by the end of the meeting. Osmond said as proud as they are to have new members, there is still room for more people. He said the application process i sn’t difficult and requirements include being 19 or older, having a valid drivers licence, having a vehicle and a phone. The goal of the department is to have members in all 15 communities that make up the Codroy Valley, he said. In 2013 the department responded to nine calls. Three were grass fires, three were structure fires, two were automobile fires and one was a false alarm. The current members of the department are: Tony Colbourne ( chief ) , Nelson Samms, Bri an Osmond, Dwayne Downey, Don Donaldson, Glen Janes, Gary Childs, Craig Collier, Jerry Samms, Anthony Gale, Gerald Fowlow, Bill Donaldson, Kyle Lomond, Cryil Samms, Lester Samms, Chad Samms, Donald Samms, and Joey Samms.
