This is the young man who many people in our tightly knit community are grieving over. A life too short, a family forever fractured, but a young man who is proving to be a catalyst for discussion, and, hopefully, change. I only knew you as the kind young gentleman at Sobeys, but I know your Dad because he is an upstanding businessman and caring individual in our community. If only there was some magical way to have shown you, before that tragic night (much like in Dickens Christmas Carol), how many lives would be changed because you are not here, and how many people truly love you. Social media is awash in love and support for Carters family. As a parent, this is a nightmare I hope I never live to experience. Yet, as a parent, my heart is heavy because my children allow my mind to wrap itself around the horror and the hurt. We will again talk to our kids about mental illness at the supper table tonight, and I will again discuss things with my students - all in the hopes that some of this discussion is remembered in times of darkness. I hope the Asbells and Carters close friends know how much support they have in our community, and I hope they feel the love that is being expressed from young and old. May God provide you all with comfort during this horrible time.
