This is true: There is a man in India - lets call him Mr. A. for short - who has invented a machine that is changing womens lives. Did I catch your interest? OK - now get your mind out of the gutter; this is serious. In 1998 Mr. A got married and, when his wife moved in with he and his mother, he learned for the first time ever that women had their periods monthly. He then watched, sadly, as his wife struggled to manage the only way she could afford to: with reusable pads that she was embarrassed to wash in the public washing area, or hang in the sun to dry. (In many areas the situation is worse if women cant afford reusable pads, or if water is miles away.) Any woman can imagine how isolating and unhealthy such a scenario would be. So, against serious odds (bbc/news/magazine-26260978) he decided that he could do something to help. He created a machine (that won a National innovation competition in India), which is being used by womens groups across the poorest States in India to produce hundreds of affordable, disposable pads every day. The impact is astounding. Not only does the enterprise have a far-reaching benefits when it comes to human rights for women and breaking social taboos. But it also has far-reaching impact related to womens health, educational attainment, and the economy. A group I volunteer with in Denver - Womens Global Empowerment Fund - is moving this enterprise to Northern Uganda. They need $7,000 to do it.
