This is what I offered my CSE 230 students the last two weeks: 3 hours of office hours every working day for the last week of semester. That adds up to a total of 15 hours. 6 hours of in-class review. Added to the office hours, this gives 21 hours. This week, I gave them 3 hours on Sunday, 3 more on Monday. 27 hours. In the last two days, 4 students showed up. Answering their queries took all of 20 minutes. Today, I leave work around 2, to finish some bank-related chores. Students start mailing and messaging You left already?, I had problems!, I need help!. None of these people even showed up once in the 27 hours I provided them. They waited till the very last couple of hours. These same people will later complain about how I was not around to answer their problems. How is this fair? What more could I have done, short of forsaking the rest of the world and sitting there for these students? If I gave them 270 hours, they would still show up right after the last one!
