This is what I wrote to Scott Morrison: Latifa, Farus and Niza: Because, Mr Morrison, they do have names. Because the fact that you left a pregnant woman in detention on Nauru in the first place was not, and will never be OK. Because, Mr Morrison, these people are not in fact criminals. Because they have lived a life and made a journey that you can not possibly imagine. Because you support a government that is taking every opportunity to dehumanise people who are seeking a better life. Because it is not the role of government to keep a father from his child. Because it is not the role of government to dictate to a mother how many hours a day it is deemed sufficient that she spend with her child. Because you do not represent me, or my values, or my vision for an Australia that is genuinely compassionate. Because we will raise the next generation of children to see the cynical, parochial, self-interested values you are promoting for what they really are: antiquated, dangerous and most definitely not in the best interests of what is now a global citizenry.
