This is what someone who worked with top officials in Fiji Government. Every Taukei should read this and worry. I don’t like the term “Fiji Islander” because the word “Islander” in Fiji means someone who is indigenous to the Pacific. What is wrong with “Fiji Citizen” since that is exactly what it is. “Islander” can be mistaken for ethnicity. Just for our information, this attempt to hijack the name “Fijian” is a deliberate attempt to marginalized the Fijian race. I know exactly where it comes from and who plotted this. It dates back 44 years or so. It started with “Indo-Fijian” with John Samy and his ilk at USP at that time and then moved to “Fijian” when Bai gave him the opportunity to grab the rest. The ethnic terms are Fijian, Indian, Chinese, Mixed, and Other. I believe “Fijian” is defined by Fijians in the VKB. There is only one nationality and that is “Fiji Citizen”. Call it anything else and scoundrel like Samy will try to twist it in the direction of racial supremacy. I consider it an insult to other Pacific Islanders to call Indians or Chinese “Islanders”. Again, it is a hijacked name. Keep it simple and correct. I know John Samy personally and worked with him in CPO in the 70’s and 80’s. I believe John studied political science at USP and somehow ended up as an “agriculture expert” at CPO, presumably because he grew up in he low lines at FSC Lautoka. In 1980 Aquila Savu who was Director of Economic Planning spent a lot of time drinking yaqona one floor down in the Ministry of Transport, and soon Tomasi Vakatora made him the Manager of Air Pacific. John Samy was the most senior local at the time, and he moved into Akuila’s old job. At the time there was a healthy smattering of Fijians, Indians, and a few specialist expatriated in the office. John Samy promised that promotions would be on “merit”. Within two years all Fijians had left the office save one (Jo Delai who was a bit older). To put it bluntly, John Samy’s “merit” turned out to be a code word for Fiji’s new caste system. As if there were not enough Indians in Fiji, John even hired a couple of expats from the Bank of India who had no special talent but they were the right race. Those who left the Fiji Government CPO at that time referred to it as the “Indian Planning Commission”. We later learned that John Samy was involved in writing the manifesto for the NFP, something which was strictly prohibited by a civil servant, and was being done under the nose of Ratu Mara, because he was our Minister in addition to being Prime Minister. Back to the word “Fijian”. There is no question that the word was given to indigenous Fijians. It probably came in with the missionaries and was based on the Tongan word “Fisi”. Until that time it is unclear whether there was any concept of Fiji as a single geographic entity and it consisted of something like 50 old “matanitu”. Regardless of its origin, it clearly was given to ethnic Fijians, not immigrants to Fiji. In fact in line with Fiji’s custom of referring to people by where they come from, people who came from India were called Indians and people who came from China were called Chinese. I was an American but was referred to as “kaivalagi” or European, which I had no problem with because my roots came from England, Scotland, and Germany before they migrated to America. Now let me mention John Samy’s political strategy. I don’t know if it might have come from Karl Marx since John also considered himself a Marxist at that time. John told me personally that if you want something politically you ask for twice what you think you can get, make a fuss over it, and then compromise for perhaps half of what you you initially asked for. It is the old rug merchant haggling concept which used to be common on Cummins Street. Then, that having been accepted, you do the same thing all over again and get another half of the remainder. You keep up this process until you end up with what you initially set out to get and the poor sucker you were negotiating with has found that he has negotiated himself out of existance. I am telling you John Samy told me this to my face and thought he was clever. So John was pushing for “Indo-Fijian” from way back which caused many Fijians to cringe because they did not any part or combination of their word Fijian to be hijacked. Obviously by the time Bainimarama came around and grabbed Fiji with no idea what he was going to do with it, in pops John Samy with his opportunity to lend credibility to Bai with something called a “Charter”. I am quite sure Bai, the bonehead he is, thought that this could be passed off an a Constitution to lend credibility to what he wanted for himself, and what he thought he needed to do to gain mainly Indian support. So that is where we first heard that all Fiji Citizens were to be called “Fijians” and Fijians were to be downgraded to “iTaukei” a word that Samy thought could be sold to Fijians because it may imply to them that they own the land, a sensitive issue in Fiji. John would have been well aware that this was nothing less than an attempt to marginalize Fijians. It is equivalent to Australians calling their indigenous people “Aborigenes” (are they even Australians?) and India calling their tribal ancestors to “untouchables” and “junglee” who were confined to either the streets picking up filth, or “scheduled trible lands”, in India. The next thing I start hearing is that Fijians who do not want Indians to be called Fijians must be “racist”. Tell me, isn’t this the pot callng the kettle black”? The real racists are the people who try to steal a name given specifically to another race without any permission whatsoever from the People who OWN that name. How can people who simply want to keep their name be labeled “racist”. Well this is all just part of the negotiation or grabbing of what someone else has and immediately claiming that it is your own. Mind you I have nothing against immigrants who came to Fiji and helped build the country and were granted equal citizenship with Fijians. Most Indians and all races in Fiji are wonderful People. The person I am talking about is John Samy, who is a conniving racist BAD human, no matter what race he is. I would not be at all surprised if John is still advising Bai and Khai from behind the scenes. Khai’s thesis has been referred to as the Fijian Sunset Clause. As far as I am concerned his agenda is no different from John Samy and it is properly called “cultural genocide”. It is conniving people taking advantage of Christians who believe that it is more blessed to give than receive. What is the next step in this cultural genocide? Well clearly once everyone accepts the “homogenized Fijian” idea (as written into the illegal 2013 Constitution) then what about “Fijian” land? Of course there can be no distinction in land ownership because we are all “Fijians”. I certainly hope that you get my drift. I can see clearly where this is headed. Each little step with marginalize Fijians until there is nothing left to take. It reminds me of the story from Hawaii. The Missionaries came and said to the People, “Let us pray”. When the prayer was finished and everyone raised their heads and opened their eyes, the Hawaiians had the Bibles and the Missionaries had the land. I certainly hope that the Fiji will attend the meeting at the UN on Indigenous Rights and will present a convincing expose of what is really happening in Fiji. What is happening was not 100 years ago or 100 years from now but right now. If Bai succeeds in this cultural genocide on behalf of Khaiyum and John Samy the game is over.
