This is where I am these days. I grew up watching — nay, revering — Michigan Football. Two of my elementary teachers were wives of assistant coaches; one of my classmates was the daughter of an assistant coach; another assistant coach (who would one day become head coach) lived in my neighborhood, and his children went to my school, helped me when I was injured, and on, and on... Ive never been a fan of the NFL, and I didnt watch college football all Saturday long; over the past few years I have found myself becoming less enamored of this sport altogether. There is a huge irony in seeing universities top paid employees being the leader of a group of 90 men who damage their brains in front of tens of thousands of screaming fans. I have to say that the more I read about this topic, the more likely I become to take this issue in front of my school board, and ask them why it is that were trying to raise smart, healthy children on the one hand, and sanction damage to their brains on the other hand. I have heard the claims that we need to embrace this sport and encourage those who play it because it may be their only opportunity to succeed in school. Im not buying it. It may be unpopular — and Im not going to say that Ill never watch another game as long as I live — but I cant encourage ANYONE to play this game.
