This is why Interlaken folk knew Sam Thompson as Sam-bock On a team event at a mountain hut with Outdoor Interlaken some years ago, Sam went off on a solo hike (taking full advantage of time in the mountains rather than joining the party). He was gone for quite a while and when he returned, out of breath, he recalled his harrowing experience. It seems that he had stumbled upon a family of Steinbock on a rocky ridge. The story continued with enthusiasm, whereby he found himself above the animals, cornered from both sides and no other option but go higher on the ridge. Finally he found himself at the top of a scree slope with the wild and vicious mountain goats charging him from all angles. He threw stones, yelled abuse, grunted and flapped about, all in an attempt to get the Bock to move on but to no avail. They just kept coming. With his cunning skills of distraction Sam managed to seize a chance to scurry around the side of the pack, and he ran the whole way back to the hut where he found the party in full swing. No one seemed interested in his story, nor did they believe his terrorising near death experience. Our consumed booze took control, and the jokes began, teasing the big man about his fight with the Swiss goats. The Sambock was born. In reality the Steinbock are strong, agile and iconic mountain animals. Fitting.
