This is why I’m convinced we must teach healthy, values-based leadership to this emerging generation of students. While they may have to learn work ethic, patience and emotional intelligence, as a demographic, they’re poised to hunger to do something that matters. We will have to enable them understand: If they want change, they may have to take an unpopular stand. They may not get consensus on Facebook or Instagram. If they want to start something, they aren’t entitled to the perks of a big company. It may be rough going at first. If they love technology, they’ll have to learn soft skills via human contact. Social intelligence cannot be learned on a screen. If they want to make a difference, they must focus on what they’ll give, not what they’ll gain. It’s about sacrifice, not big platforms, at first. Our work is cut out for us… but we have the advantage of this mindset I’ve described above. Let’s go build a population of leaders who solve problems and serve people.
