This is why race and racism is a far more complex phenomenon than most people understand. There are a few things that we need to understand in order for us to properly wrap our heads around this issue. 1) Its perfectly possible to be racist against your own race. Black cops disproportionately arrest black men just as much as white cops do. Our eyes look outward, at others, not inward at ourselves, so its easy for us to forget what we look like to others--that is, until we experience a situation that forces us to remember what we look like to others. Young black men are constantly being reminded what they look like to others because society keeps reminding them their black. 2) This isnt solely a black/white problem. I would argue the three most important factors are class, age and gender. Being a poor, young man is by far a much, much, MUCH better predictor of social deviance, apathy and alienation. It just so happens that there are a lot of black men who fall into this category, and while middle class young white men can be just as delinquent, irresponsible and apathetic, theyre more likely to get a pass because its assumed that they are that way because of outside influence, where young black men are presumed to be that way by nature. Whence white privilege. youtu.be/zrXOoUsXZvE
